Emily has been going to camp since she was six, and loves the swings, trampoline and singing. The 10-year-old really enjoys the independence she gains, the friendships she makes, and the fun she has. “I think Emily might love camp more than Christmas,” says her mother, Holly. “She would love every day to be a camp day.” At camp, Emily has met other children with Down syndrome, but, Holly says, “that hasn't yet become a huge thing for Emily. We have not gone into detail with Emily about what she has nor given it a name or a label; she knows her body works differently and some things are more difficult, but so far she hasn't really noticed the similarities of herself compared to others with Down syndrome. I think she sees people as I hope more people would see Emily and others with disabilities, first as individuals.”
